La Fondita is an authentic Mexican restaurant in a hole in the strip mall. I have no doubt they would be slamming on Ritchie Hwy. I cannot understand why they are not busy. The food is awesome! I've tried just about everything on the menu and I couldn't complain at all! If you didn't get your chips and salsa just ask for it. Come check it out for yourself. Yum!

Fairly cheap real Mexican food at a 3.5 Stars! I ordered a carne asada torta, a chicken taco, and a bottled water and it came out to $10.60. Chicken taco was pretty good, but my torta was ok. It was missing two key ingredients, mexican cheese and mayo, which maybe I needed to ask for?!? I ate half of it as it was pretty big and took the other half home where I added cheese and mayo :) Free first basket of fresh chips and salsa is a plus. Service was good even though the server's English was subpar, she checked on me frequently to make sure everything was good.

Ok first off this is a hole in the wall spot: which normally is where you'll find neighborhood gems!! Well my pics will explain if your a visual. When I checked in here I sat in the back since there were only 3 other families here and I expected to get the common chips & salsa... Nope well no one had them. So I ordered the Jamaican juice (which is like a sweet dark red Kool-Aid drink), beef soup, and enchiladas verdes (Rojas was out & same for tripe soup out of stock). So while I'm waiting surfing the web the waitress (1 waitress & 2 cooks) sets me the beef soup and 5min later my main course. You'll need salt since not much seasoning and it's spicy which I like. This is a 1 time only but my main reason to leave the house during this heavy rain was to get an authentic meal. I can blame the travel channel for doing a show on Mexican cuisine "Man Vs Food". I'll go somewhere else next time but funny thing was when I initially walked in there was a baby in his Carrier knocked out sleep, tucked by the wall on the floor, okay that's normal. The family paid, walked out, and then came back!! They forgot the child and I got a pic of it. SMH Oh and it's majority Spanish speaking but they know enough English to briefly explain

Remember: I use a grading curve for Mexican food this far from the border. Unlike most Mexican restaurants in the area, the single employee I saw working while I was there spoke next to no English. And unlike the Mexican restaurants that don't have English speaking employees, she didn't appear to judge me when I ordered using my gringo Spanish. And even more unlike ANY Mexican restaurant I have been to on the east coast, I paid only a little over 8 bucks for two burritos. One of which I added guacamole to. (Please note that this place is CASH ONLY!) Unfortunately, they have a tiny tortilla problem. Imagine 20% more filling than a Chipotle burrito but using a tortilla half the size. It was like a giant soft taco. Both the carne asada and pollo asado were great, but it spilled everywhere and I wound up eating most of it with my hands. Because, you know, real men don't use utensils. Then, even more unfortunately, my wife found a hair in her burrito, which quickly made her appetite vanish. My last complaint, and this isn't that big of a deal, is that they don't have red salsa. Just the green stuff. No me gusta. I want to come back to try their shrimp burrito (burrito de camarones, if you want to order one for yourself) because they used to be my thing back when I lived in San Diego. I'll also give their enchiladas a shot and report back. I shouldn't have to worry about the tiny tortilla problem with enchiladas... I hope.

This place is amazing. We've eaten there between 7-10 times. WHY is it always empty? Our check is never more than $25 although we order guacamole (made per order, totally fresh) and three a la cart things each, and drinks. The chips and salsa alone are with the trip: their corn tortillas are probably made on premises and are thicker than ones in the store, and fried into chips! The salsa isn't the nasty crushed tomatoes with a teaspoon of jalapeno juice that passes as salsa at the local places (el salto, los portales). They blend together lots of delicious roasted things, and it's tangy and complex and just the right amount of spicey: I could drink it by the gallon. The portions are huge, and each item a la cart is between $2.50 and $4. We always leave with leftovers and absolutely stuffed. It's baffling that the restaurant is always empty or filled with one or two other tables at the most (more natives than gringos). I joke that it must be a front, because with the expense put into decorating the restaurant, the extensive menu, and the absolutely awesome food, how can they survive? Tongue and tripe and ceviche and pozole are on the menu, and we adore the roasted lamb. Maybe some of the places in Fells are as authentic and tasty but definitely not the aforementioned joints outside of the city. So, in summary, please try this place and get addicted ASAP before they go out of business!

La Fondita serves authentic Mexican food (NOT) Tex-Mex. We have eaten at this restaurant several times and even taken our relatives from Mexico to eat here. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
